RENEWALS
Registration Link at Bottom of Page

The classroom portion of the class will start with the regular class at 8:00 am (check in around 7:15 am), but end at approximately 11:30 am.

Renewal applicants will then meet the very next day (SUNDAY) at Bracken Range, 19140 Marbach Lane (2 miles north of Rolling Oaks Mall-Nacogdoches Rd and 1604). Renewals who have fired and cleaned their weapons recently (weapons will be inspected by range officers) will start qualifying at 9:15 am and should be through, baring any problems as noted above, in approximately 30-45 minutes.

If you have not yet received your renewal application (generally DPS sends this 5 to 6 months ahead of renewal time, however, if you have moved and not notified DPS, post office will not forward to different address), you will need to call DPS (1 800 224 5744) and request one be sent to you. You do not need this to take the class, but will need the provided form to send the paperwork in. We will provide you with the necessary paperwork except for the Renewal Form provided from DPS.

As you probably know, Renewal applicants are required to renew their license within six (6) months of the expiration date; that is, 6 months BEFORE it expires! Often times people will call us and say that their license is up for renewal in the next month. Well, that's okay, but there will be an overlapping of time that they are "not licensed" due to their procrastination. As soon as you receive your reminder notification from DPS to renew, go ahead and get the ball rolling.

Also remember, the renewal paperwork needs to be sent to DPS within 6 weeks after taking the class.

The letter that DPS sends will be a one page letter explaining the upcoming process. You will be provided with a PIN number should you wish to use the internet to perform the renewal application processs. You will also be provided with a number to DPS that you can call for assistance. Either way you go - you must be in contact with DPS to acquire your "application". A person does not need to physically have the application in hand to take the renewal course, but you WILL need to have the application form prior to returning your paperwork to DPS.

While the following certainly does not apply to a vast majority of renewals, we seem to be having an inordinate amount of problems (bad shooting and malfunctions)with more than just a few renewals at the range. Some renewals seem to believe that because they qualified 4 to 5 years ago, they only need to carry their handgun and not worry about if it will fire, or if it does, not worry about hitting anything until re-qualification time.

Folks, as evidenced at the range almost every month, the problems we most encounter are caused by a small minority of the renewals not knowing about and/or not caring about their weapon, much less practicing every now and then. These potentially dangerous conditions extend qualification time and frustrate everyone the rest of the day. For the life of me (no pun intended), I just don't understand why in the world a person wants to carry a handgun of which they forgot which end of the barrel the bullet comes out, where the safety is, how to load a magazine, or how to put the gun in battery. What's more depressing is not really caring to find out except maybe every 4 to 5 years when they blow the dust off it.

As some of the renewals (again, certainly not the majority) seem to find the classroom and range nothing more then a necessary evil, or at the very least a chance to see if their weapon still shoots, we are seriously considering discontinuing the renewal classes.
As it is now, we will not rent weapons to renewals (they really should have their own wouldn't you think?).

If you are going to carry a weapon, then respect the use and care of same, or some bad person will take it from you and show you how to use it, but in the wrong direction.

IF YOU DON'T CARE, THEN DON'T RENEW YOUR LICENSE.

TO SAVE YOU TIME AND HEADACHES
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
PLEASE READ

If you THINK you are a "3rd time renewal", please consider the following scenario.

1. You applied for and received your ORIGINAL license as a "newbie" and received your first actual license;

2. After a minimum of 4 years, you would have then applied for your FIRST renewal and received your FIRST renewal license

3. After another minimum of 5 years, you would be in a position to again renew. This is where some people are getting confused. They think that since this would be their third physical license, it must be their third renewal. But that is not the case. DPS does NOT consider your original license as part of the "renewal" process. Sooooo, if you fall into this scenario, then this would only be your SECOND renewal.

You wouldn't fall into, what we call a "papers only person" until the NEXT renewal.

We hope our explanation is satisfactory and helps, but just in case you are still confused and feel the need for further discussion, please call DPS at 1-800-224-5744 and they will be happy to check your exact record and advise you.

You are still required to renew with DPS 6 months prior to the expiration date of your license, or within 1 year after the expiration date of the license. New fingerprint card, new pictures and the appropriate fee along with other documents in the renewal package, will still be required to be posted to DPS within the proper time frame noted above.
