RANGE
Range Masters On the Firing Line
Scott Tudhope and Sammy Miller

Only brand name, "S.A.M.M.I." approved, factory new with brass casing ammunition will be allowed on the range. Sorry, no reloads, Monarch brand, aluminum or steel casing allowed.

Although you will only need 50 rounds of ammunition to qualify, we suggest you bring 100 rounds just in case. Ammo can be purchased at the range.

Range qualification at Bass Pro Shop's indoor range will be the first activity on the class agenda. If you are sharing a weapon with someone, please remind us before we start qualification...do not wait until the last relay.

You must qualify with a 32 caliber or up. If you qualify with a semi automatic you can carry either a semi or a revolver whereas, if you qualify with a revolver, you are limited to carrying only a revolver (I didn't write the rules).

After a short safety briefing starting at 7:00 am, the first group of six shooters, along with their weapons, ammo, targets and signed releases, will be escorted over to the range by Bass Pro Shop staff.

When you enter the actual range area, please place your weapon, pointing down range, and ammo on the table at a vacant firing position, then hang up your target on the holder. Using the top toggle switch on your left, position your target to align with the first line mark on the wall which is the three yard line. Although the range is well lighted, the bottom switch is for additional lighting which you may use if you like).

When all targets are positioned correctly, the first phase of fire will be explained, instructions given to load a magazine with a specific amount of ammo. Please do not insert the magazine into your weapon until instructed to do so. After loading the instructed amount of bullets in your magazine, hold up your magazine so Scott and I know you are ready. On the command to make your gun ready, insert the magazine while keeping the muzzle pointed down range and your finger off the trigger until the command to fire is given.

From this point forward, instructions will be given for every action on the range qualification. With the exception of dropping your magazine after you have fired the appropriate amount of shots, and the slide is locked back, place the weapon on the table (muzzle pointed down range). Do not handle the weapon, bullets or magazines until instructed to do so.

If you do not understand the instructions, raise your hand (the one without the gun in it).

It is important to note: as we are shooting inside, bullets fired either low or high can become dangerous for everyone. as you prepare to take your firing stance bring weapon straight out from your body as if pushing it toward the target. Do not point the muzzle above shoulder height or below knee level.

After firing the required course of fire, make sure your weapon, as well as your neighbor's weapon, is completely empty and in safe mode (slide locked back, magazine out and no live round in the chamber). Toggle your target in and remove target to take back to classroom for scoring. Either Scott or myself will again check your weapon as you exit.

If all weapons have been maintained properly and malfunctions are kept to a bare minimum, each relay should not take much over 20 minutes.

About 95% of the shooters have actually already qualified after finishing the 7 yard line, therefore, the 15 yard line becomes a good time to "tweak your shooting".

As the time of shooting is strictly dependent on the shooters, if you are unaccustomed to loading and firing your weapon, or if you have none or very limited experience, this may not be the class for you unless you take steps to correct the situation by practicing at a range or taking a basic handgun course prior to taking this class. The basic handgun course I recommend is Gun Training San Antonio. Although we are not unreasonable on the firing range, safety violations are not tolerated. If you point your weapon at anything other than the target, regardless of whether it is loaded or unloaded, or if you cannot keep up with the required course of fire, you are subject to be removed from the firing line.
